Part of a series produced while on board the Baltic International Trawl Survey with DTU Aqua.
Fish painted with sediment sampled from the seabed where they were trawled. The length of time spent on each portrait dependant on how long the fish could survive out of water before being returned to the sea. The consistency and colour of the sediment indicates relative oxygen levels of each trawl. The deepest trawls caught very few fish and produced the blackest sediment samples, revealing much less oxygen in the water at that depth. In a sense the sediment therefore reflects the living conditions of the fish in each location.
